"How does a city enter the running to host the Olympics?
Landing the Olympics takes the stamina of a marathon runner, the precision of a sharpshooter and the charisma of the U.S. gymnastics team. Not to mention loads of paperwork.
The competition for the 2016 games started with applications from seven cities: Chicago; Tokyo; Madrid, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Baku, Azerbaijan; Prague, Czech Republic, and Doha, Qatar. Each detailed plans, from venues to financing.
The International Olympic Committee set up a 13-person working group, which rated the bids in 11 categories: infrastructure, transportation, venues, Olympic Village, accommodations, environmental impact, security, financing, government and public support, past experience and overall legacy. Some categories, such as infrastructure and accommodations, were more heavily weighted than others." ...
