UCSD Holds Strong as Economic Force, But Wary of State Cutbacks

"UC San Diego is a dynamo, an industrial-sized generator of jobs and a force that pulls the San Diego economy along, according to a study commissioned by the university.

The campus on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and its Hillcrest medical center, contribute an estimated $4.1 billion to the city’s economy annually and $5.7 billion to the county’s economy, when counting direct spending, indirect spending and personal income.

It’s a $7.2 billion force exerted on the state economy.

UCSD was the third-largest employer in San Diego in 2007, with 26,900 employees, behind the state and federal governments. The university provides stable jobs, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said during a Sept. 30 news conference detailing the study. Sanders called UCSD an example of “what’s going right locally” during tough economic times." ...
