Economy's impact on U.S. domestic travel

New report shows a decline in U.S. domestic travel

"The state of the U.S. economy is, according to a new national report, impacting domestic and international travel in and to the United States.

The good news, says one local hospitality industry leader, is that declining gas prices have provided some temporary relief.

The new report was produced by Global Insight Inc., one of the world’s leading economic/financial analysis and forecasting firms. It projects a year-over-year decline in the total number of domestic trips inside the country and slowed growth in international arrivals to the U.S.

According to officials with Boston-based Global Insight, recent challenges in the U.S. and global economies, “exacerbated by the global credit crisis and a less vigorous tax rebate bounce,” will cause domestic travel volume in America to falter in the second half of 2008. But travel spending is expected to continue to show some growth thanks to rising transportation and hotel prices." ...
